Wings beaten out of 30,000 dots
Not a single image. The whole butterfly is six surfaces stitched together — the wing outline is one sine: how far you walk along the vein and how wide it spreads both come out of the same formula, and the three scallops along the outer edge are the sin(3πs) inside it. Veins, border and the eyespots on the hindwings are calculated too. Flapping doesn't redraw anything: every point remembers which wing it belongs to, and the wing turns about the body axis. Pull "Flap" down to 0 and it lies flat like a specimen — that is when you can see how the pattern is built: the veins are dark bands pressed in by an |sin| curve, the darkening towards the edge is the border, and the two bright rings on the hindwings are the eyespots. Push it to the top and the wings swing past 70°, and the underside comes out darker than the top — nothing painted that in, every point works it out from the way it faces.
